PeopleNet eDriver Logs Simplifies Compliance with Complex New Hours of Service Rules in Canada
Burlington, Ontario - December 4, 2006 - PeopleNet Canada announced that its eDriver Logs® application will comply with the new hours-of-service rules for professional truck drivers in Canada. PeopleNet eDriver Logs makes it easy for fleets and drivers to observe the complicated new rules that take effect on January 1, 2007. eDriver Logs runs on the g3 Onboard Computing System from PeopleNet, the leading provider of intelligent onboard communications and solutions in North America.
PeopleNet eDriver Logs automatically records driver hours of service with minimum input from the driver and displays logs on demand for enforcement personnel. Smartly engineered, accurate and intuitive, eDriver Logs will easily handle the very complex calculations required as of January 1, 2007, under the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations in Canada below the 60th Parallel.
"The new hours-of-service regulations contain more than 14,000 words in 101 sections. It is a daunting training challenge for fleets and a steep learning curve for drivers," said Jamie Williams, president, PeopleNet Canada. "PeopleNet eDriver Logs relieves the fleet of an enormous training and administration headache. It also frees the driver to concentrate on the road ahead."
A driver can display current log information on the g3 computer when necessary -- for a transport ministry inspector in Canada or a DOT inspector in the U.S., for example. Because eDriver Logs takes advantage of g3's mobile communications capability, a fleet can -- at their option -- make a diver's log viewable for inspectors on a web site.
PeopleNet's real-time, wireless communication also makes log information visible to fleet dispatchers, company compliance officers and other fleet managers. eDriver Logs provides dispatchers the hours-of-service information they need to efficiently assign loads to drivers and generates real-time alerts for both driver and management when a driver's hours approach legal limits. Drivers spend less time filling out paper logbooks, and everyone benefits from fewer violations and the threat of regulatory fines. Of course, eDriver Logs retains data for required fleet record keeping.
PeopleNet eDriver Logs requires little input from drivers because it tracks driver hours using functions within the PeopleNet g3 system, including GPS location and PerformX® vehicle monitoring software. PeopleNet auto-duty status change will move the driver between driving and on-duty status based on movement and stop thresholds without any driver interaction. With a button press the driver tells the PeopleNet onboard computer when an international border is crossed.
International operations are made easier with eDriver Logs, which changes its method of calculation when a driver indicates a border crossing eDriver Logs will even issue an alert when a driver operating under Canadian rules has logged too much time to comply with U.S. rules that allow fewer daily driving hours.
eDriver Logs is just one of the profit-driving functions available with PeopleNet's g3 Onboard Computing System, which delivers GPS location and cost-efficient wireless communications. PeopleNet applications streamline trucking operations, enhance customer service and monitor vehicle and driver performance, security and safety.
